Medicaid

Medicaid is free or low-cost health insurance. It covers doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, mental health, and more.

Who this program is for

People with low income, children, pregnant people, parents, people with disabilities, and adults 65 or older. Many immigrants in New York can also qualify.

What the rules say about eligibility

Eligibility is based on your income, household size, age, and whether you are pregnant, disabled, or a parent. New York has higher income limits than many states, and pregnant people and children have even higher limits. Income limits change and should be checked on the official website.

Documents the program commonly asks for

  • Proof of identity (photo ID, birth certificate)
  • Proof of New York residence
  • Social Security number (if you have one)
  • Proof of income for everyone in your household
  • Proof of citizenship or immigration status
  • Proof of pregnancy (if pregnant)
  • Information on any other health insurance you have

Common reasons applications are denied

  • Income above the limit for your group
  • Missing proof of income, residency, or immigration status
  • Did not complete the application or interview
  • Did not respond to a request for more information
  • Did not renew on time

Renewal / recertification

Medicaid must be renewed every 12 months. NY State of Health or your local district will mail or message you. Renew on time to avoid losing coverage.

Emergency information

If you need medical care right now and have no insurance, hospitals must still treat emergencies. You can also apply for Emergency Medicaid, which covers emergency care for some people who do not qualify for full Medicaid.
